It's Official!

December 3rd 2007 07:33
Hola compadres,

Well it has been an enjoyable week. The weight of eleven and a half years of Conservative rule simply floated off Our Nation's collective shoulders and we all exhaled for the first time in a long time. Let's hope this is not just a beautiful dream. Wasn't it glorious to wake up this morning to the blissful reminder of Kevin Rudd's swearing in today, delivered by our bedside alarm clock radios?

It's real. Go ahead, pinch yourself!

So it's official, the Howard era is over, but how humbled must the man be by now? Having to hand in his resignation as Prime Minister to the Governor-General, adding insult to injury, the Liberal front bench has almost entirely gravitated to the back bench, to impart their war stories and advice to the younger ones still wide-eyed and reeling from the level of devastation. It even took - supposedly - a haranguing from Malcolm Turnbull to jolt Dr. Brendan Nelson out of his grief.

It's all 'New and Improved' around the Federal Liberal and National parties at present. The me-toosim this time sounding from t'other side of the fence as Nelson started to warn Rudd that he was being watched. Whether he was being watched back is hard to ascertain, so far, Nelson has still to cement his position as a serious contender to his own crown, let alone Rudd's and hopefully it's not going to take a jump start every morning from Malcolm to get his rearend into gear.

Have a look at the photograph in today's Australian online as Rudd signed himself into the top job. He looked serious, very serious and with the requisite amount of joy clearly not banished just yet, you get a sense of 'Here we go' as we plunge headlong into change. Kyoto is high on the agenda, Gillard's saying new IR laws by June-July next year, it's only a matter of time before the talk becomes a juggernaut and, Senate-willing, the wind of change will pass through.

It surely can't be one man's delusion that there is a sense of optimism about the place now. The sight of John Howard confessing, not really conceding defeat, but confessing defeat was amazing to watch as it was preceded by Maxine McKew aglow amongst her delirious throng of supporters, not quite claiming victory, but it was so close you could taste it. Whatever happens next (and let's face it if that can happen anything can), you know it's going to be worth watching.

To move from painfully watching the Nation's Moral Compass scrambled amidst the born-to-rule, old-school-tie arrogance of life under the Libs to (hopefully) seeing the environment taken seriously, the economy sensitively managed, IR recalibration and the threatened Education Revolution. Bring it on we say, this could make watching Question Time educational, not farcical.

This is not Year Zero, this is Day One for Kevin Rudd and while being a Prime Minister is not necessarily something to be enjoyed, one hopes he derives a great deal of satisfaction from his work, some comfort and security from working with his colleagues and the knowledge, and this is not mere speculation, that each and every day he will tangibly feel the pleasant sensation of having achieved another small victory for us.

Cheers,

Michael.

Peter Garrett On Trial

November 10th 2007 09:50
Howdy disco citizens,

Everyone in 2004 seemed like they wanted Peter Garrett to upsize his eco-warrior status and position of totemic political angst in Midnight Oil, to fully functioning Federal Labor gun for hire. "Garrett For PM" has been uttered more than once by more than a few, and it seemed like such a good idea at the time didn't it, signing up to join the ranks of Latham's Labor for a tilt at the dark perimeter of Howard's morally anaemic Australia. Someone, somewhere had to take a stand, this time, in the Federal seat of Kingsford Smith, Garrett stepped up. It was exciting to watch and it is still a matter of watching a man in transition

On Being Green

November 1st 2007 04:46
Greetings Earthlings,

Well, it's probably one of the most important issues in the election campaign and on the one hand we've had John Howard talk about the Kyoto Protocol as a "symbolic" document and on the other we have Kevin Rudd talking about thinking about our future. It's important beyond words what is going on in the battle to save our environment, but no one's saying what needs to be said

The Great Debate

October 22nd 2007 07:27
Aloha,

The worm turned, tempers flared, questions went unanswered and, there but for the grace of God go us, Kevin Rudd won. It's surely time to invest in a Kevin '07 bumper sticker. For those of us who have watched Rudd tentatively navigate through his first election campaign as Opposition Leader, it was a pure delight to watch him confidently and convincingly wipe the floor with an evasive rambling and cantankerous John Howard

How Would Jesus Vote?

October 19th 2007 06:11
Guten tag,

Religion and politics are generally two hot, if not taboo subjects to broach. Expect a fight when either of them is raised over a schooner or two after work on Friday. If this were America of course, things would be different, but Australians, by and large, tend not to be too enamoured of or illuminated by religion and intensely interested in politics. But it's there and it's fertile ground that has to be ploughed

There Is Power In A Union

October 18th 2007 02:15
Hi there,

The debate over the relevance of unions in the working lives of Australians has been a crucial battleground for this campaign. Ever since AWAs were seen to be abused by employers to strip away the rights of some employees, in some cases firing staff and rehiring them under restrictive AWAs, the Coalition have had the knives out for unions. They make no secret of this either, it's cut throat down to the last note, unions are a sworn enemy of the Liberals and they must die

Can You Buy An Election?

October 17th 2007 08:54
Greetings readers,

It's been a funny old start to the election campaign already, what with over 30 billion dollars being 'found' in the budget to offer income tax relief for the nation. Now it has to be made crystal clear, no one dislikes a tax cut. You're not going to find someone in full ownership of their wits to talk them down. Generally speaking it's a good thing, but why couldn't Peter Costello have pulled this particular rabbit out of his hat at the last budget? It seems like a very cynical and flashy way to try and woo voters with big numbers and golden promises. It's a good thing that Labor haven't been drawn into a big swinging appendage contest. We wait on that reply eagerly

Hey there,

I'll make this the final post in this series, so I'll try and cover the more important errors that appear to have blighted the Liberal Party and hacked away at their credibility over the last eleven years. The only reason I've dragged it out over three posts is because there is a long list and let's face it, they all deserve some airtime, but obviously we can't cover everything and keep you all interested
