It's Official!
December 3rd 2007 07:33
Hola compadres,
Well it has been an enjoyable week. The weight of eleven and a half years of Conservative rule simply floated off Our Nation's collective shoulders and we all exhaled for the first time in a long time. Let's hope this is not just a beautiful dream. Wasn't it glorious to wake up this morning to the blissful reminder of Kevin Rudd's swearing in today, delivered by our bedside alarm clock radios?
It's real. Go ahead, pinch yourself!
So it's official, the Howard era is over, but how humbled must the man be by now? Having to hand in his resignation as Prime Minister to the Governor-General, adding insult to injury, the Liberal front bench has almost entirely gravitated to the back bench, to impart their war stories and advice to the younger ones still wide-eyed and reeling from the level of devastation. It even took - supposedly - a haranguing from Malcolm Turnbull to jolt Dr. Brendan Nelson out of his grief.
It's all 'New and Improved' around the Federal Liberal and National parties at present. The me-toosim this time sounding from t'other side of the fence as Nelson started to warn Rudd that he was being watched. Whether he was being watched back is hard to ascertain, so far, Nelson has still to cement his position as a serious contender to his own crown, let alone Rudd's and hopefully it's not going to take a jump start every morning from Malcolm to get his rearend into gear.
Have a look at the photograph in today's Australian online as Rudd signed himself into the top job. He looked serious, very serious and with the requisite amount of joy clearly not banished just yet, you get a sense of 'Here we go' as we plunge headlong into change. Kyoto is high on the agenda, Gillard's saying new IR laws by June-July next year, it's only a matter of time before the talk becomes a juggernaut and, Senate-willing, the wind of change will pass through.
It surely can't be one man's delusion that there is a sense of optimism about the place now. The sight of John Howard confessing, not really conceding defeat, but confessing defeat was amazing to watch as it was preceded by Maxine McKew aglow amongst her delirious throng of supporters, not quite claiming victory, but it was so close you could taste it. Whatever happens next (and let's face it if that can happen anything can), you know it's going to be worth watching.
To move from painfully watching the Nation's Moral Compass scrambled amidst the born-to-rule, old-school-tie arrogance of life under the Libs to (hopefully) seeing the environment taken seriously, the economy sensitively managed, IR recalibration and the threatened Education Revolution. Bring it on we say, this could make watching Question Time educational, not farcical.
This is not Year Zero, this is Day One for Kevin Rudd and while being a Prime Minister is not necessarily something to be enjoyed, one hopes he derives a great deal of satisfaction from his work, some comfort and security from working with his colleagues and the knowledge, and this is not mere speculation, that each and every day he will tangibly feel the pleasant sensation of having achieved another small victory for us.
Cheers,
Michael.

SILLY OLD LIBS,
SILLY OLD LIBS,
DING DONG THE BITCHS,
ARE LIVING DEAD!!
HI HO HI HO...
IT'S OFF TO LABOR WE GO...
ummm...yes I agree...I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I'm glad I'm glad I'm glad..
ok, enough of my cornball songster crap.
What really pleases me, is to see that utter oaf, that snivelling party turncoat, that moral chameleon Nelson, being made head of the Libs, and his 2IC, whatever her name is, a perfect match, guaranteed to keep them in political purgatory for at least another ten years...hopefully more!!
Nelson. remember, is the moron who ordered fighter jets that are already known to be far inferior to our neighbour's jets, which out shoot, out fly, out climb and see, and out manouver the new ones we are getting!!
This may not seem a big deal...but what it means is, we have now lost air superiority in our neck of the woods. Should this remain the case, watch out for the growing arrogance of our very near neighbours!
cheers
