The End Of The Beginning Of The End Of John Howard
March 16th 2007 10:31
Hullo,
Let us all embrace this fact: It looks like the uncerimonious defrocking of John Howard as our nation's leader is in full enough swing to consider it a reality, but let's not go there just yet until he's conceding defeat and we can see Satan's tail between his legs on national television. Phew. Long sentence. It has been a long eleven years, so why don't we re-cap on some of his scintillating work, as the Libs went hacking into the moral fibre of this wonderful country. It's going to hurt. It's a long list, but hell, I've suffered enough of it and not the worst of it I assure you, so now it is his turn.
Reconciliation.
Mr. Howard developed quite an aversion to the word 'Sorry' going back a few years. Remember? The issue, in the long run, provided what turned out to be a blip on the radar of the national consciousness. It was quite a few years ago now. About seven to be exact. The issue hasn't even raised it's head ever since he managed to defiantly and publicly pretend that it never happened. It was too long ago, beyond living memory. What utter rot! The dispossessed and divvied up First Nation peoples of this land were subjected to their ill-treatment, separation and suffering within the last fifty or so years. What's not worth saying 'Sorry' about? Aboriginal people still get leprosy in the 21st Century. Lord help me, I'll say 'Sorry' for that right now. Where exactly have we misplaced or re-written those history books? Mr. Howard wants kids to study history and this is great, a fine idea, but not our own because it would make him look like an unrelenting, cold-hearted imbecile. Rudd will say 'Sorry', just after Howard mumbles 'Sorry' to himself as he slithers out of government. Ah, I can almost taste it.
The Kyoto Protocol On Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
This has been a big one lately, what with Al Gore trotting about the globe reminding us that we're getting a bit hotter than we used to be and Antarctica is probably going to be a pretty interesting battleground when all the ice is gone and they're surfing in the inner west in Sydney. Why on Earth are the US and Australia the only two countries in the world that won't/can't/are too selfish or evil to ratify this treaty and reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Why can't we just nudge our commercial interests to one side for a good cause and a rather crucial change in our corporate focus just to preserve our flipping planet, life on Earth and the wonder and beauty of God's Creation. People NOT profits. It's a beautiful idea isn't it. Why not? It's a no-brainer, but unfortunately these people really have no bloody minds at all. To appropriate one of Sting's great moments, I wonder if the corporate cowboys and girls love their children too? They must, but they're just bastards, that's all.
Terrorism.
Ah, the convenient untruth. McCarthyism rears it's ugly head once more, paranoia envelopes us in suspicion and distrust and all the while, David Hicks rots in Guantanomo Bay for five years, our defence budget is jacked up beyond any reasonable need to do so and our fridge magnets still haven't saved us from any threat. Real or imagined. One of the more evil claims that John Howard has made along the way is that the Bali Bombings were our September 11. Firstly, this is untrue. The Bali bombing never occurred on Australian soil, even though Australian lives were lost. More Indonesians died, so it was their September 11 if it was anybody's. I know Americans who thought that was distasteful. We are blessed, not a victim. We don't live in a country populated by extremists, but why oh why were 100 or so Al Qeda operatives found in Australia, when S11 happened? If our intelligence was actually intelligent, shouldn't knowledge of them being in our country precipitated their being asked to leave? As always with Howard, everything's petooty about. A good policy on terrorism might involve kicking them out. Just a thought.
It goes on, but I don't want to pursue all of this right now. Get ready for it though, as I said it's a long list, we're three topics down and damn it, we ABSOLUTELY MUST get through the Lion's share of them or I'll never get this off my chest, no, off my heart. Howard, the end of the beginning of the end is at hand. Australian's all let us rejoice, join in and kick him while he's down, it's our last chance to do it. Keep doing it until the twitching stops, then we know we've got him.
Love always
Michael.
